WHAT IS ENDOPHYTE?

The term endophyte is taken from the term for an organism living in the interior - "endo" of a plant - phyte. This organism is part of the Acremonium family and was first studied by Bacon, et al (1975).

In New Zealand, it was found that entire meadows were populated by Perennial ryegrass with high endophyte content. This had evolved by natural dominance, for non-infected plants (plants not containing the endophyte organism), were being eliminated by Listronotus bonariensis. Turf and amenity grass breeders soon saw repeatable results in turf plots where high endophyte-containing varieties were withstanding the attacks of billbugs and chinch bugs.

WHY WILL IT BENEFIT ME?

Endophyte enhanced grass should provide a natural biological resistance to crown and leaf feeding insect pests such as billbugs, sod webworms and chinch bugs. There should be less need to use environment threatening insecticides or, to reseed turf destroyed by these insect feeders.

Turpin Farms offers two mixtures of Bluegrass this season, developed with a mixture of the following Kentucky Bluegrasses:

The National Turf Grass Evaluation Program (NTEP) has sponsored several regional Kentucky bluegrass cultivars trials conducted at most of the northern agricultural experiment stations. The current tests at Iowa State University include a high-maintenance trial with 103 cultivars, a second high-maintenance trial with the same cultivars that is subjected to compaction treatments, and a low-maintenance study with 21 cultivars. For the latest test results, visit the National Turfgrass Evaluation Program Website at www.ntep.org.

Turpin Farms Knows Good Sod Begins with Great Seed

Pick only the Highest Quality Sod,
from the Highest Quality Seed for your Corner of the Earth

As a golfing professional, home owner or park manager, you know that no off-the-shelf grass seed variety will do. That's why years of study and evaluation of turf-grass mixtures in various parts of the country enable Turpin Farms to make specific recommendations for lawns, play fields, tees, greens, fairways, roughs, and club house grounds.
Most off the shelf grass seed contains a percentage of weed seed. And some grass seed labels may list the species of grass seed but not the variety (a species may have several 'varieties, each with different characteristics) so you have no real idea what kind of grass you're getting.

When you buy from Turpin Farms, you can have complete confidence that the sod you're getting has the highest purity and seed integrity possible. In fact, the grass seed we use is certified for purity and quality.

Much of our work and evaluation of new grass seeds is done with the golf course in mind. Before planting our special mixture of grass seeds each season, years of testing and evaluation is done to assure your success.

We continually research and study the new varieties of grass seeds introduced every year to ensure we are providing improved resistance to diseases, improved winter hardiness, as well as to ensure parietal integrity, purity and plant quality.

The bottom line is Turpin Farms strives to assure the buyer that he will receive the same quality turf grass the plant breeder developed.
